About the Author
Grant S. Lipman, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of surgery in the division of emergency medicine at Stanford University and associate director of the wilderness medicine fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is board certified in emergency medicine, has completed a fellowship in wilderness medicine at Stanford, and has gone on to publish and present numerous articles, book chapters, and original research in the field of wilderness medicine. He has served as president of the American College of Emergency Physician section of wilderness medicine, provided medical direction for expeditions on numerous continents around the world.

The best whitewater first aid kit WFA book

My wife and I are avid campers, backpackers, snowshoers and whitewater rafters. I'm also a WW kayaker. We've looked at a lot of wilderness first aid books and found this one to be one of the best.
It is very well organized, concise and easy to follow. The information is very accessible and easy to follow. The diagrams are very clear and easy to follow and understand.
This book lacks an index, but the table of contents is pretty efficient and organized alphabetically.
This book may not be the most comprehensive (Wilderness First Responder by Buck Tilton is our favorite WFA book overall), but when you factor is it's compact size and that it's fully waterproof, we think it is the best WFA book to include in a whitewater or any marine environment first aid kit.

Every backpack should come with one of these.

This book presents the lay person with an entire assessment framework on how to treat injuries that are suffered in the field.
First, the book gives you an overall Assessment mechanism for all patients and takes into account the safety of the first aid giver - something that is sometimes ignored by many first aid books (I loved that aspect of the book). Then, for every major type of injury like burns, broken legs, chest trauma etc. the book gives you:
1) General Comments
2) Symptoms
3) Treatments
4) Evacuation conditions
It's a full color book that is entirely waterproof. I keep it in a small Amazon Basics case that is designed for a small tablet - this keeps the pages from being bent too much. It's a very lightweight book and it does not leave my backpack.
There are a lot of first aid books out there but after looking at several, I will go for this book 100% of the time for any kind of Wilderness first aid. I also find myself reading it when I'm camping and I think that just going through the book every once in a while turns you into a better first aid giver.

very practical and complete

I own several wilderness first aid books, and this one by far is the smallest, easiest to use and breaks things down into easily understandable applications without all of the verbosity of many of the other books I have read that were written by doctors. Dr. Lipman has a great grasp on what it means to be out in the wilderness and what a person can do to help minimize the inherent risks of getting hurt or needing first aid when away from civilization. On top of all that, some serious bonus points for the waterproofness of the book. A must buy for every outdoor enthusiast!
