This well-researched but somewhat stilted narrative persuasively attacks both the rationalization for the Argentinian military coup in 1976 and the U.S. influences that supported seven years of societal repression. A staff member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a former reporter for Newsweek and other publications, Andersen draws on more than 1000 interviews as well as public and confidential documents for this lengthy, detailed reconstruction of events. Portraying Argentina as "a land of stunning paradoxes," Andersen traces the Golden Era of Juan Domingo Peron and the twisting trail of political and societal changes, such as a surge in virulent anti-Semitism and anti-labor violence, culminating in the military takeover. He shows how the military overstated the threat from left-wing guerrillas and manipulated guerrilla activities through turncoats, setting the stage for torture and murder, buttressed by a cultural war against intellectuals. While the Argentine military feared President Jimmy Carter's human rights policy, Andersen shows how U.S. bankers supported the security apparatus and Ronald Reagan's administration cozied up to the generals.

Excellent, an important book

This is a book that will help put into perspective the horrendous years of Argentina's military war against its own citizens. Don't read it in the evening, the horrors recounted will take your sleep away.

Those who lived in Argentina were kept in the dark about the horrors that were committed in our own neighborhoods. I remember corpses being discovered in the same playground I would take my children on Sundays, but I did not know that those were not a result of "battles" but people who had been killed after torture and put in place to make citizens think that a dirty war was being fought. There was no dirty war, but a generation annihilated, suppressed at the hands of a greedy military playing games with people's lives.

Nobody who lived during that time will ever be completely free of that nightmare that lasted years, but this book helps put things in perspective. It is a tough read, and unless you have a good reason to read it, don't try.

I was lucky enough to leave Argentina, but those 30,000 plus that disappeared should not being forgotten. As we know, humanity tends to forget too quickly and repeat past mistakes.

This book is a very detailed description of Argentina's unfortunate dirty war of the 70s and 80s. It's very dense reading, but well worth it.

great for 10 year old starting puberty

I bought this and On your Mark Get Set Grow and What's happening down there? for my 10 year old. They were great, explaining things I didn't even think of and it helped keep the dialogue about the subject going with him. He came up with great questions. This book was nice because it had lots of quizzes so he can keep track of which phase he is in.
I think I was less ready for him to have all of this stuff. Difficult to come to terms with the fact that by 10 years of age, kids are getting exposed to plenty of stuff at school from their friends. I'd rather he be getting correct info and that it's coming from home. Good Book!!!!

a reliable book

my son had questions, a lot of questions (just turning 11) - i answered them honestly, straighforwardly and with compassion. I asked him, since he had a lot of questions would he like a book about it, where all his questions would be answered. That he could always talk to me about it even as he was reading the book. He pretty much leaped out of his chair and said that would be great. I got two books but this one is clearly the right one, the reliable one ( my older ones enjoyed their copies too when they were his age). This really is the right book. It's been around a long time, its clear, open, seems to answer all the school stories that they hear. He can read it alone, use as a reference, it is not embarrassing to him, doesn't talk down to him but meets him right at his age. It covers before, middle and end of puberty. It has pencil drawings that are dignified - and it talks about all the differences between boys body types and growth stages - it was a sense of relief for my son to know he was normal. It even asks just a couple of minor questions that he can answer. Secretly, I think those questions were put there for parents. They are questions like Do you have more questions you want to ask? - It's a respectful book. It is what I would call a traditional book for a traditional family. I branched out and got two books but the other one seemed to talk in a too immature way. Like it wasn't hitting the mark for the right age of puberty. I think parents should be the first source of answering questions when children are little and then when you sense a deeper interest offering a book helps the child take control of their thoughts without being embarrassed. I do check in with him, and ask how he likes the book. If there is anything he would like to talk about in more detail, but for now, this is exactly the right level for a 10,11 year old introduction to their bodies.

Excellent resource

Excellent book. Very straightforward, with decent b/w drawings and excellent information for growing young men. We make a point of reading this once a week to our son, and he does really invest in it and ask questions, etc. I even think he looks forward to the time, and we definitely see that this time has given him more confidence in who he is becoming, physically. We've found it opens doors that otherwise might not open by themselves. Highly recommend.

details are important

This is a compelling story. I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. I was reminded of the awesome presence of the LORD when I was first saved. When the author told us he kept repeating "Thank You. thank You, thank You" endlessly and was delighted to keep doing that for the next 3000 years, I identified with what he said. Much of the content was encouraging.

However, there were many glaring errors in the Kindle edition that made the task of trying to decipher it a chore. Words misspelled all over the place. Words missing. Sentences that go nowhere. The further into it I got, the more frequently I encountered these problems. This book is plain hard to read. The simple mistakes are very annoying. That is a major problem, because the story is extraordinary, but the execution is pathetic.

With such an important message to convey, you MUST pay attention to how it is presented. If it is hard to read because of frequent errors in the text; if words seem to be missing; if the layout is jumbled and unclear, you lose your reader. I don't know if the Kindle edition is different from the print edition, but the kindle edition should not have been approved for publication. Somebody somewhere should have taken the time to sit down and study every line of this book and ensured that it was correct in every way before putting it on the market. It is an insult to your readers to sell them a book that you have not bothered to make right.

It seemed to me that there was a lot of padding in this book (to make it book length possibly?). The trouble with that is, again, that through numerous repetitions of the same anecdotes, you quickly lose your reader. This book reminds me of those American 'reality TV' shows that are 99% recap and 1% actual story. It might work in the USA but it doesn't work elsewhere.

I guess the author wanted to get his testimony out there ASAP after the events, especially since people started hearing him speak. That is understandable, but maybe now that some time has elapsed, it might be prudent to go through the manuscript again, and pay attention to the way it is written: basic grammar and spelling; basic structure and progression. Then, the next generation of readers might get a lot more out of it.

At the moment, the story is completely undermined by the unprofessional way in which this book has been put together.

I am so grateful to have read this! I have a friend who is 101 years old, and wants so badly to go be with Jesus..when I told her what I learned about Heaven, her eyes shone with such happiness that I will never forget. Dean, you have so humbly written this, thankyou.. I am 42, I read a lot, and I have NEVER READ A BOOK AS GOOD AS THIS! Thankyou thankyou!! I would love to meet you and your wife someday.

The text reveals the close connection between many seemingly unrelated topics, such as probe absorption, four-wave mixing, optical instabilities, resonance fluorescence and squeezing. It also comprises discussions of cavity quantum electrodynamics and atom optics. The 4th edition includes a new chapter on quantum entanglement and quantum information, as well as added discussions of the quantum beam splitter, electromagnetically induced transparency, slow light, and the input-output formalism needed to understand many problems in quantum optics. It also provides an expanded treatment of the minimum-coupling Hamiltonian and a simple derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, an important gateway to research in ultracold atoms and molecules.

Firstly, I would like to say thanks to the authors, I am an experimentalist who was lack of the theoretical training, I read the book by self-studying. The style of this book inherit the book ¡§Laser physics¡¨ (by Sargent, Scully, Lamb), which is also my favorite. Especially, in the new editing, Meystre update new topics in the field of modern quantum optics (such as cavity QED) which I think also very good for self-study. However, the new typesetting of the book makes me somehow uncomfortable since the spacing of the lines is too compact. I would appreciate the editing/typesetting of the second editing.

Good as an introductory monograph, poor textbook. All the information is present, but it is not well organized for self learning or course development. Nevertheless it is worth reading if you are interested in this field. If you are new to the material, start elsewhere, then come look at this book.

This deck is part RWS, part Thoth, part Deviant Moon. It is part feminist, part masculine. This is a great study deck, as it includes the creator/authors own take on Numerology, and includes Astrological and Hebraic references. The images are dark, but not scary. The base cards are part pip and part illustrated. This is a deck worth studying and taking head on.

The artwork looks beautiful at first glance, but the graphics seem more obviously CG upon closer inspection due to the harsh lighting/rendering; the figures almost seem like stock Poser figures and the shader that was used on skin could do with a bit of work. Also, the name on my High Priestess card has a typo -- it is misspelled "High Priestness", with an 'n', so anyone concerned with perfection might be a bit put off by that.

I try to speak logically and rationally with most things, but I find that difficult with tarot. That said, I felt a strong pull towards this deck, which was gifted to me. It has worked well for me, giving consistent, clear readings for the past year. The cards are well-made, durable enough to withstand frequent use, and the designs carry high amounts of symbolism that help with the meanings. However, everyone is different, and it is possible that this deck will not work well for you. Be aware before purchase that this deck does contain heavy amounts of symbolism and is not the easiest to learn for beginning tarot users.

The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible for the first time to calculate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way. Modeling by distributed systems now also supports work in many areas of physics (plasmas, new materials, astrophysics, geophysics), chemistry and mechanics and is finding increasing use in the life sciences.
