A beautiful book that captures my imagination

I had no idea this book would be so beautiful until it arrived. Gorgeous. Not just a coffee table cookbook though. This is a practical cookbook celebrating maple syrup in savory and sweet dishes. As the reader you are taken on a journey with stories of maple syrup, detailed notes on how the process is completed, and of course the art work...the gorgeous art work! Chef Picard's first cookbook is lovely, but this cookbook strikes a cord into my imagination, and I'm in love with all things maple now.

FASCINATING COOKBOOK

Honestly, this is more of a coffee table book than a cookbook: it's absolutely gorgeous! Fascinatingly informative in terms of how a sugar shack works, and the recipes are beautifully illustrated. The overall look and feel is very modern and graphic: not your typical boring cookbook.

Speaking of recipes, all of which include maple syrup (from tablespoons to liters, depending on the dish), you'll have to keep an open mind regarding what you might consider edible. In addition to standard desserts and roasts and sandwiches, you'll also find some unusual recipes such as squirrel sushi, accompanied by rather graphic photos regarding their preparation and eventual presentation. This book is absolutely not for vegetarians, or the squeamish. If you think meat only comes in styrofoam trays at the supermarket, you may want to stay away from this book.

The overall length of individual recipes may be off-putting, but there's a lot of technique in this cooking. Some recipes are most likely lost on home cooks who may not have access to certain ingredients, or who don't have the space or necessary equipment. But that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable reading, nevertheless. Most recipes, however, are within the realm of the average home cook's capabilities. All are clearly written and illustrated.

In all this is a solid effort, and it's obvious that Mr. Picard has a true passion for meats and, most of all, maple syrup.

Highly recommended whether you plan to cook from it or not.

Duck Fat Pancakes Rule!

I expected this book to have fantastic recipes, but I didn't think it would be as beautiful as it is. The Sugar Shack is absolutely gorgeous! I love the layout, incredible photography, artistic design, and yes the recipes. I made the duck fat pancakes at the suggestion of a friend, and they will be done with every opportunity that I have to make them :-)

Concise and easy to understand

I find this book to be a terrific reference for those who are new to the field as well as for the seasoned physics student. It takes an unorthodox pedagogic approach which is very effective, giving a comprehendible and surprisingly comprehensive presentation. It is helpful both as a quick reference for finding equations and definitions of terms and as a text to read from beginning to end.

I am currently taking a course in which this text is our primary learning manual. Relative to physics textbooks in general, it went into great detail concerning fairly advanced topics. However, it did not do a good enough job of laying down the fundamental principles of physics, which makes it more difficult to comprehend the more involved topics. The book also lacks a glossary and a comprehensive index. The examples are either too complex or too simplistic, and I have been forced to use several other books as auxiliary materials. If you are a physics instructor, I implore you, please DO NOT USE this text in an introductory course, unless the primary goal of your class is to drive away students from the study of physics, ranting madly about.

Great little book. Contains many useful charts and info. Easier to look up things quickly because of it's size, but the machinery's handbook is still the the bible of machinery references. But this handy reference has the most common reference info. in a handy size.

A beautiful literary Renaissance of the Byzantine Empire

Since Gibbon’s “Fall of the Roman Empire” Byzantium has suffered from a bad reputation. It is primarily remembered for subtle theological disputes, sometimes concerning only one letter ( Homoousios vs. Homoiousios in the controversy about the human and divine nature of Christ) or one word ( “filioque” the Western addition to the Nicene creed considered anathema by the Orthodox). Nevertheless the results of these disputes are a hallmark of Christianity even today. In German, the term Byzantine is a paraphrase of bizarre court rituals like the obligatory proskynesis in front of the emperor that survives in the Muslim prayer tradition. However, the Byzantine or late Eastern Roman Empire had also a glamorous side which Carol Strickland brings back to life in her historical novel "The Eagle and the Swan ". The heroine and main character is Theodora, the daughter of a circus bear keeper who started her career as a strip dancer and prostitute and ended up as Empress and one of the most influential women of late antiquity. Theodora is credited for important social reforms that improved the life of the poor and had a mitigating influence on the absurd theological disputes that split the empire. The novel, constructed as a story within a story in the tradition of Chaucer and Boccaccio, is full of excitement and crackling eroticism, painting a vivid picture of the time in which the Roman Empire under Theodora's husband Justinian briefly rose to old grandeur after the Goths in Italy and the Vandals in Africa had been defeated by his generals Belisarius and Narses. in Theodora’s times Constantinople was the biggest city in the world, with trade relations reaching from China to Scandinavia. The church of Haghia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) was the world’s largest building. The palace guard consisted of Vikings (Varaegians) that had migrated to Constantinople from Scandinavia through today’s Russia (a runic graffiti can still be seen today in the Haghia Sophia). Hence Carol Strickland’s novel is not only highly entertaining but also profoundly erudite and offers the reader a thrilling lesson in history. Some historic novels have become world bestsellers, e.g. “Sinuhe the Egyptian” by Mika Waltari or I Claudius, Emperor and God by Robert Ranke Graves. In my mind Carol Strickland’s work has a similar potential.

A true page-turner!

When I first saw the Amazon entry for "The Eagle and the Swan," I was intrigued with the idea of a novel which takes place in the 6th Century in a far off land with a little-known history. Once I started it, I couldn't stop. I can't recommend it highly enough; it's a real page turner. Carol Strickland's tale of 6th Century love, lust, court intrique, and the rise to power and position of two extraordinary commoners, is riveting. Theodora was a very early and admirable feminist: capable, smart, shrewd, savvy, and...beautiful as well. She had it all. Strickland depicts Theodora, as well as Justinian, as complex, multi-faceted characters who prevail in a highly charged political context.

I am also impressed by this "new face of publishing," a digital book with links to all sorts of related materials. Reading the material on or from the links provides the reader with a fuller and richer 'picture' and understanding of the text. The links also explain and clarify much of the language and settings of the book. The interactive book; what a great idea; a very "today" departure from traditional publishing in our tech-driven world. Readers of "The Eagle and the Swan" are in for a treat; try it; you'll be glad you did.

EAGLE AND THE SWAN IS VERY GOOD!

It's a book rife with detail and passion. If you like historical fiction this book hits on all cylinders. The level of detail in terms of prose and historical relevance is engaging. And THEN the plot is what's moving. The love and lust combined with a compelling story, taking on universal themes from a cross section of history, makes for a gripping work. Although I might lean more towards fantasy and science fiction, this book engaged me from a more thoughtful and deliberate perspective, focusing on the power of desire and the sometimes overwhelming force of human relationships. I really, really enjoyed the book.

Splendidly revealing

This is a great book of revelation detailing experiences many have had and not understood. It is not a book of science but a book of wonder at a "mystery." Not all mysteries need to be solved scientifically. My 1911 encyclopedia states "uranium is a useless metal." This FASCINATING AND ARTICULATE BOOK IS A FIVE STAR READ FOR ANYONE WHO STILL HAS A LIFE OF INTEREST...DREAMERS AND POETS.

A Book to Read and Ponder

The author has compiled an impressive collection of instances of the 'third man' phenomenon--the sensation that one's survival is aided by an 'extra' presence in times of great duress.

Beyond the compilation of a plethora of third-man stories (from mountain climbers, castaways at sea, arctic explorers, over-worked medical students, etc.), the author considers various explanations to the phenomenon. From the divine (supernatural) to the arcane (an artifact of the brain's reaction to low-level magnetic fields) to the evolutionary (a relic of the caveman's bicameral brain). The book provides plenty of anecdotal material and explores the various explanations without drawing a final conclusion. The reader is free to draw his own extrapolations from the raw data.

A good read. Provides plenty of nourishment for intellecutal expediture.

This book is entertaining but doesn't really dive in to explore the various occurrences and how they might be different. It's more a collection of stories, often one right after the other with little or no analysis. The author will start off a chapter with an idea described in a paragraph or two, then launch into story after story with little insight, to the point of feeling like you're reading a scrapbook of newspaper clippings...very few interviews with the subjects (those who are still alive). Also very few original ideas are offered by the author, mostly just summarizing work other scientists have done.

It's entertaining reading at times, and certainly well-researched, but the book has a feeling as though it was written a bit too early, before the author had time to process everything and present it in a coherent manner. While this might be the fault of the subject matter, consider the precision with which philosophers have treated the very same subjects of the metaphysical world.

Generally entertaining read but don't expect much more.
