Interesting Look at Gang Sociology

This landmark 1927 book by sociologist Frederick Milton Thrasher of the University of Chicago was considered a classic of its time. We read it for a college class, and it was pretty interesting despite a somewhat academic style. Thrasher illustrates the lifestyles of Chicago's then 1,300 street gangs (today it's about 200), most of whose members were of white immigrant stock (today its largely blacks and Latino's). As the author makes clear, 1920's gang members were known for toughness and delinquency. Still, the gangs of the 1920's weren't nationally affiliated, nor were they heavily into guns and illegal drug sales. It also seems that gang members of the 1920's were mostly teenagers - today many are well into adulthood.

This book was updated in 1963, and today there is an award in the author's name (set up in 1992) to honor leadership in the fight to make our society safer from violent gangs.

concise, informative and to the point

It is hard to imagine a better overview than this one of the foundations of modern aesthetics and design in the decorative arts. From a few, well-chosen excerpts for each theorist, Frank distills essentials of concepts that they themselves formulated over volumes and years. Her selection reveals not just broad and deep knowledge of their work but also analytical skill in uncovering the important nuggets buried within a huge and diverse body of material. Her own commentary is written with economy and clarity. Having borrowed this book at the library, I realized within an hour that I had to own it. It has been immensely helpful in my own work, and will be an essential reference for years to come.

Predictably, most texts in this anthology are quite dull and don't come anywhere close to presenting anything that could be called a "theory" of decorative art. There were only three texts I liked; I will quote from them here.

Karl Philipp Moritz, Preliminary Ideas on the Theory of Ornament, 1793: "Application of the concept of isolation to ornament. The frame adorns a painting because it isolates it ... All settings adorn by containing and isolating the thing they set apart, by detaching it from the surrounding mass of other objects, and by presenting it as something exceptionally worthy of our attention ... The vase, the container par excellence, is thus an ornament in itself---because it embodies the idea of the thing that isolates and contains within itself ... A thing that is to contain will open and widen gradually---for, if it were as wide below as it is above, it would appear to be passive rather than active ... This idea of containment is most clearly manifest in the calyx of a flower, which falls back over itself to catch the falling dewdrops with its outermost rim, and to let nothing escape that approaches it from above."

Adolf Loos, Ornament and Crime, 1910: "[T]he man of our day, who in response to an inner urge, smear the walls with erotic symbols is a criminal or a degenerate. It goes without saying that this impulse most frequently assails people with such symptoms of degeneracy in the lavatory. A country's culture can be assessed by the extent to which its lavatory walls are smeared. ... I have made the following discovery and I pass it on to the world: The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from utilitarian objects. I believed that with this discovery I was bringing joy to the world; it has not thanked me. People were sad and hung their heads. What depressed them was the realisation that they could produce no new ornaments ... Then I said: Weep not! ... we have fought our way through to freedom from ornament. See, the time is nigh ... Soon the streets of the city will glisten like white walls ... Then fulfilment will be come."

Gottfried Semper, Concerning the Formal Principles of Ornament and Its Significance Artistic Symbol, 1856: "[T]he artistic feeling active in ornament, though it first appears as a very early stage, long remains uncertain of its own true nature ... It only unconsciously obeys the universal cosmic laws which the Greeks, as I believe, were the first and only nation to interpret and apply universally. What is this cosmic law? Perhaps we can trace it by dividing ornaments into categories ... 1. The Pendant. Pendant ornament is primarily associated with those qualities of visual form that we call symmetry ... Examples ... are the nose and ear pendants ... As heavy bodies that hang free, they swing with the wearer's every movement and thereby prepares us for the moment of tranquility and balance that will ensue ... The aesthetic value of symmetrical ornament is markedly enhanced by its influence on the actions of the individual whom it adorns. At rest, posture must be corrected; in motion, a degree of dignified restraint must be observed ... A convincing example of the aesthetic effect of the principle under discussion is the artistic pleasure evoked by comely female figures bearing vessels of water on their heads. These were the source of the canephori and caryatids that are important motifs in architecture ... 2. Annular or ring ornament. Annular ornament is mainly proportional: it serves to emphasize the proportions of the body, to remedy deficiencies, and in some circumstances to maintain, by exaggeration ... certain effects that may be characteristic of may suit a specific purpose ... Almost every culture known to ethnology has been seduces into barbaric lapses of taste by the attempt to lend authority to the human head--and to its individual possessor--at the expense of good proportions, by loading it with superstructures and other top-heavy ornaments. Only the Hellenic and kindred cultures never did this; and this in itself justifies their claim to be the only nonbarbarians. We ourselves still have our grenadier caps and our tubular felt hats: forms of unexampled barbarity ... 3. Directional ornament ... is designed to emphasize the direction and motion of the body ... It relates entirely to the antithesis between the front and back of a figure or object, and is intended primarily to be seen in profile ... It is interesting to observe how differences in national character are reflected in the dominance of one or other ornamental principle. The earthbound, law-abiding regularity of Egyptian art is reflected in the dominance of symmetrical ornament ... The Assyrians preferred the annular ornament ... here we detect the feudalistic, dynastic, yet centralizing culture of that nation ... The forest Indian of North America, decked in the flight feathers of the eagle, has a special feeling for the asymmetrical principle, with its emphasis on motion and direction entirely in keeping with his nomadic life as a hunter ... Among the Hellenes ... we find the freest combination of the three principles, each operating in the field appropriate to it."

Hippocrates was truly hilarious. How close he was intuitively to knowing how the human body works, over 2000 years ago. Even at some of his hilarious, theories... he was still on the right track... such a contrasts to todays upside down backward, nonsensicle system of medicine... I bet he is turning in his grave with the FDA banning all natural health practicioners and products from using truthful facts of what they do. Banning the words Prevention, illness, disease, cure, treatment...etc... from anything natural.

Live Life and Make a Noise

Refining Sound

Now retired I've just taken up an interest in synthesizer music and needed a book to help with the basic concepts of sound creation and use. I hit the nail on the head with this one! Brian takes you through the very basics of natural sound and electrically generated sound explaining how different sounds can interact in various ways or just plain cancel each other out. There are also explanations of the various pieces of hardware in analogue and software synthesizers. In fact I didn't know it but there are whole families of different types of synthesizer technologies. There are a couple of down-loads associated with this book so be careful to follow instructions closely. There is Maxitime 6.1, Crystal Soft Synth, and some chapter files relating to the book from University of Oxford site (passwords are in the book) to download. One thing that I missed was to download a “host” otherwise things won't work (so I downloaded Savihost suggested on the Camel Audio site, who by the way, have a very good freebie synth called Alchemy). There is a sound generating programme called Maxitime 6.1 that relates to the subject matter of the chapters in, “Refining Sound”. It is a must have to get this working because there is like audio laboratory examples from University of Oxford that you will need to hear and play with in Maxitime 6.1. You are also lead to a fantastic software synth called, “Crystal Soft Synth” at a site called Greenoak.com. Once again make sure that you get all the bits and pieces. The manual (PDF)on the Greenoak site is also very useful for understanding the Crystal Synth and also gives definition to some of the acronyms used in synthesizer music and technology. There is also a book called simply, “Synthesizer” by one Mark Vaill and I hope to get this at Amazon when it is released. Also a handy thing to have is a midi keyboard so as to be able to properly use the software synths but make sure that you have the right “driver” for your operating system. I bought a Roland midi keyboard for windows 8. My machine has Windows 8.1 and guess what, the enclosed software didn't work and I had to go to the Roland site for a Win8.1 Driver. I've bought a Casio XW-P1 synthesizer and am having a great time with it and thanks to Brian Shepard understanding the noises that I'm making.

If you are new to synthesizer music or sound creation I'd recommend this book to you.

This book is useful only after you've learned to program sounds by ear

There are way too many books on the market purporting to teach sound design/synth programming. This book is useful only after you've learned to program sounds by ear, at which point it is informative and well organized. However, it will not teach you make sounds deliberately, with purpose. For that I recommend the software tutorial unfortunately titled Syntorial. If that's not an option a distant second place is Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook.

A New Standard For Synthesis Instruction

This book does not disappoint. I will be using Refining Sound as the sole textbook for my electronic music class next semester. Brian Shepard has written an easy-to-understand yet amazingly thorough book on the complex processes of synthesis. Shepard always keeps the focus of the book on the performer/student, preventing the theory and math of these complicated topics from getting in the way of real-world applications. And, if the content wasn't good enough, the book is priced at a level that my students can actually afford (a serious concern when teaching at a community college).

Shepard does a great job of acknowledging the many forms that synthesis takes in the year 2013, allowing the book's relevance to remain regardless of how the reader plans on applying the concepts (hardware synthesizer, VST, etc). Shepard also supplies plenty of footnotes throughout, allowing the curious reader to further explore a theoretical concept or primary-source treatise if they wish.

If you are interested in learning how to control all of those knobs and sliders on your favorite synth or plug-in, this is THE book. With the arrival of Refining Sound, synthesis will no longer be an area dominated by the elite, but by the composer, the arranger, and the performer, and I am very excited to see the results.

About the Author
Robert L. Coleman (Ph. D. in Literatures in English from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1998) has been teaching at universities since 1987. Currently, he is Assistant Professor of English at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama, where he teaches American literature and composition. In addition to being the lead editor of "Making Sense: Constructing Knowledge in the Arts and Sciences," He is currently writing a book on intersections of rhetoric and romance in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American fiction. From 1996 to 1998, he was an Assistant Director of the Writing Program at Rutgers University.

Scott Campbell is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Connecticut at Waterbury, and he serves as the Coordinator of Writing at the UConn campuses at Waterbury, Torrington, and Greater Hartford. Scott received his doctorate from Rutgers University and, in addition to the University of Connecticut, he has taught composition and literature courses at Stony Brook University, Montclair State University, and Rutgers. He is currently involved in building a multi-campus Writing Center, overseeing Freshman English courses, and facilitating writing intensive courses across the disciplines.

Stephanie Girard is Faculty Development Coordinator and Assistant Professor of English at Spring Hill College. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University, where she was a Jacob K. Javits Dissertation Fellow. She is the author of "'Standing at the Corner of Walk and Don't Walk': Vintage Contemporaries, Bright Lights, Big City, and the Problem of Betweeness" (American Literature, March 1996). She has given papers at numerous conferences including the MLA and the CCCC. In addition to Making Sense, she is co-editing a volume of essays on the topic of what it means to be a professor of the humanities in the 21st century. Dr. Girard has taught basic, standard, and advanced composition; proposal writing; writing in the professions; and studies in nonfiction prose. Her research interests include contemporary fiction, the history of publishing, and the sociology of literature.

Matt Woolman is Associate Professor and Chair of the Communication Design Program in the School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University, where he teaches courses in sequential design; design theory, strategy and management; and typography. Clear, concise and helpful

This book may seem outdated (and out of print) but it's a great resource for content creators in visual and time-based projects. It really helps understand the basic structures of narratives and just digital media as a whole. It is easy to read and has clear infographs. I would definitely recommend this book for digital content creators.

A good book among so many awful ones.

Most "Motion Graphics" books are nothing but coffee table books, lots of screen caps with no substance. (Completely obsolete considering most works are available for viewing online.) This one actually goes into how the principles and elements of design pertain to motion. As well as some of the strategies implemented during conception. My only wish is that this book went even further and was more explicit.
