A Must for any classroom music teacher

Once I started reading this book..I could not put it down. It is incredibly well written with absolute clarity and an irrefutable logic. The author moves music instruction forward by leaps and bounds. This book is a must for any practicing music instructors or music education students!! It is not a how to manual but provides a framework for music instruction through technology. Great for students. It is also a valuable text book for collegiate music education majors!

My passion for crafts started at a young age, inspired by my Mom and Grandma. I particularly love to create things where you can get quick but gorgeous results, and as a designer, I love to give familiar crafts a modern twist.
This book is an introduction to new generation of cross stitch. Bold, bright and quick to stitch, the patterns have mainly been created with big count bases and wool in mind.  However what I love about this craft is that it is adaptable - any of the patterns can be used for more traditional needlepoint or cross stitch bases, so if you have a favourite technique or stash, the choice is yours.  But this is my weapon of choice - and I hope that I can inspire you to create some of your own wooly Supersize Stitches

Contemporary Projects for Needlepoint & Cross Stitch

It’s a rare modern cross stitch book that can make the transition to needlepoint as easily and beautifully as Big Cross Stitch does. In fact, if you saw the cover picture without the title you’d probably think it was needlepoint.

That’s because much modern cross stitch uses several things that don’t translate to needlepoint very well, namely: lots of colors, outlining, and partial stitches. In this book we find bold designs without the detail of outlining, relatively few colors, and whole stitches.

Besides these things, the designs completely cover the ground, unlike most cross stitch and they are stitched in a familiar material– tapestry wool.

Look inside and you’ll find that the designs are all stitched on 7-count needlepoint canvas (rug or quickpoint canvas), using a strand of tapestry wool, with only a few using cross stitch fabrics. It’s a larger ground, and more contemporary designs, but this is the same stitch and yarn used in Elizabeth Bradley kits.

In fact, in her introduction, Pearce says that these designs can all be done as needlepoint. She explains that her big cross stitch technique is a hybrid of needlepoint and cross stitch.

There are 30 projects in all ranging from a small change purse to a Christmas tree skirt. Each project is introduced with a full-page picture plus a smaller detail picture. A box called ‘stitch stats’ has the stitch count, thread, ground (called base), and skill level. The skill levels are consistent throughout the book an are defined in the first section. The first page for each project also has a material list (with amounts) and the method to complete stitching the project.

Following this you will find a full-color chart, color key, and finishing instructions. Also on these pages are some ideas for variations in making the project.

My only problem with the book is that many of the charts cover two pages. Often this can cause problems, but these charts are large and the book opens enough, so that no part is lost in the binding.

The final chapter, Stitching School, covers the basics from thread coverage to basic stitching techniques. There is also a color conversion charts that uses both symbols and names and lists colors in Appleton, DMC floss, and Anchor floss. It ends with finishing instructions for a variety of items.

I love the designs in this book. They are bright without looking childish, modern but modern that is a twist on the traditional. It’s a great resource for easy-to-complete projects that deserves a spot on your shelf.

What a shock and disappointment! This book arrived today in a foreign language, Armenian? I can't read it so have to see if I can return it. This is very misleading as the description said the book was translated in numerous languages, it didn't specify that the one I ordered wasn't translated! I guess now looking at it, it does say Armenian edition, I probably only glanced and thought it said American edition!

The great battleship Anselm II steams into the harbor of a small island, the hills of which inexplicably and continuously blaze with fires. The ship has come to explore the island and investigate a series of missing vessels in the vicinity. Lieutenant Absinthe, a young naval officer leading the reconnaissance, discovers that this enigmatic place is inhabited by even more inscrutable creatures and that he has been selected, by two chimerical cherubs, to be the island's defender. After deserting his command, the lieutenant, possessed and hallucinating, proceeds to destroy his shipmates. Mattotti's color drawingsvivid, brooding and rigorously composedcombine masterfully with a narrative of great sensitivity and lyrical mystery. The artwork has the conceptual depth and textural richness of paintings and propels the eye through this finely crafted, gripping story of mystic possession, psychic delirium and explosive, fiery retribution.

fires- a great work of art

"Fires" is about a young marine officer who leaves his ship to save a magic island from destruction. It is a beautiful, provoking and sometimes very scary artwork. For some reason it made me think of H.P Lovecraft's "Chtulhu".

not a novel - THE NOVEL ! Fires - a book that changes life.

There's not much to say - the people who read fires know what i mean and the others... well, they should just spend a few days on reading it. It's one of those books you seldomly find, a wonderfull novel from deep inside. Just read it.

A unique reading experience, like none that I have ever had.

Visually expressive, the illustrations that acompany this novel are put to great use where words would not do thr story justice. Nightmarish and surreal, the novel (seemingly) never fully explains itself. Some of the panels of artwork are so abstract, they could hang by themsleves in a New York Gallery.
Yes, you could call it a graphic novel, but that phrase, unfortunately, in the United states is still heavily associated with the comic book and thus a negative connotation. Novel would be much better since I feel that it competes quite nicely with some of the best of the written word.
Reccomended for mature readers only, not because of explicit content but because it is much too deep and abstract for the little ones to be able to graps it.

Life and Death in a Virginia Colony

I first read Martin's Hundred when I was in the hospital waiting to give birth to my first child. I managed to stay interested between my labor pains, and that says a lot about Mr. Hulme's writing! I've re-read it four times since. The archaeological details and interpretations are utterly fascinating, especially those of the pointed-roof coffins and poor "Granny's hairdo." The colonists who inhabited the Carter's Grove site really came alive for me. This is an all- time favorite book of mine.

An outstanding book for the non-archaeologist

I purchased this book on a visit to Williamsburg and it sat on my shelf for quite a while before I seriously dove in. This book combines a clear explaination of archaeological methods with the building suspense of a good detective novel. As The author and his team uncover the existence of an early Virginia colony and utilize an astounding range of techniques and research to slowly piece together the lives of the inhabitants you will be drawn into the past. More than that you will be excited to read on and discover with these archaeologists what really happened. I.N. Hume writes eloquently on all aspects of organizing and proceeding with a project of this scale and mixes those details regarding administration and method with the fascinating story of the settlement of Martin's Hundred flawlessly. I could not imagine a better introduction to the discipline of archaeology for the layperson.

Yes, Historical Archaeology is exciting!

While you might think that a book about historic archaeology would be dry and boring (and many are!), Ivor Noel Hume's story of the archaeological dig, the background research, and the people of the 17th century who lived at Martin's Hundred is fascinating. This is probably the only archaeology book that you won't be able to put down because you will want to find out what happened next. If only I could write as well!
