Who is the Audience?

This book has many fine features but has two serious drawbacks as well.
On the positive side, I have never read a more complete polemic in favor of the hedge fund industry. He shreds EMF with loads of good evidence and humorous anecdotes. However, there seems to be a constant drive to reinforce this point. Unfortunately, it takes away from a more thorough analysis of the types of hedge fund investing.
Another problem with the book is that it has trouble discovering its audience. At times, we get detailed descriptions of what alpha and beta represent (Finance 101) and at other times, abstruse PM concepts are brushed over as common knowledge.
I would definitely recommend this book but I recommend that the reader is accompanied by a Dictionary of Finance and Investing.

Introduction to hedgefunds

The book opens with an overview of hedge funds. He classifies hedge funds according to the strategies they employ: relative value, event driven, macro, etc. Not only does he explain the trading strategies, but he delves into what can go wrong. In general theres more discussions on equity related strategies, and less in interest rates. Theres lots of historical data/information on hedgefunds performance ,indicating the very poor performance (and high total risk) of traditional funds.

This book provides a nice introduction to hedgefunds, perhaps not so much news for experienced readers. At times theres very detailed information, in other parts the author provides only an overview (whos the audience?).

A Lesson from the Titanic

The iceberg on the cover represents total risk-partly visible and partly not. Ineichen's point is that hedge fund or absolute return managers tackle total risk while their traditional mutual fund counterparts worry about only one part of it, namely the risk of straying from their benchmark. His extensive discussion contains worthy lessons for all investors who want to understand risk. While not every chapter may be useful for every reader, this book is an excellent place to learn about alternative investment strategies.

There were so many things to love about Unbelievable, I don't even know where to start. Lilah, oh Lilah! I love this girl.There's nothing bad about a lil kick-ass in a heroine, either. This girl has a whole host of her own issues to deal with, but she's not afraid to meet them head on and to do what needs to be done to protect the people she cares about. Though (Unbelievable) revolves around Lilah and Cole, all our favorites from the first book are back and better than ever. Seth, Maggie and Booker all have big roles in the story that keep you thoroughly invested in each of them...Jamie Canosa

Sherry did it again! I absolutely LOVED Unbelievable!

Wow! Oh wow! Ms. Gammon delivered yet again like she did in Unbelievable. When I finished reading Unlovable first book in series, I was blown away and couldn't wait to dig into the next one. But as much as I wanted the next book, I didn't think I could love another character like I loved the first two. I'm one of those girls that when I start reading a series I fall in love with my characters. So Ms. Gammon outdid herself. I absolutely LOVED Lilah. She was just as a victim as Maggie was. She was a sweet girl. One thing about Gammon is that she writes very descriptive. So descriptive I can actually see everything I read vividly in my head. And I really enjoyed that about this book, every paragraph I read was a vivid scene.

Unbelievable is Cole's story. If you read Unlovable, then you know who Cole is. Cole is the sexy yet very clumsy doctor. He won my heart with his kindness and his sweetness. He's definitely a guy you have to snatch up if given the chance before someone else does. And that's what Lilah did. She couldn't help but fall for his charm. But will her family history let her keep the new love of her life?

In Unbelievable you get a spend time with the characters and see how they interact with one another. You can feel their chemistry and their concerns. You get to fall in love with Cole like Lilah did. You also get to find out what has Booker over the edge which causes him to behave the way he does. And you get to witness the love between Seth and Maggie.

Unbelievable sucked me in immediately. I knew from the beginning that I liked Lilah and I liked her for Cole. I understand her motives and felt a lot of compassion for her. Deep down inside she's a good person who doesn't know how to disappoint her father. I enjoyed reading how their relationship blossomed. I also enjoyed the back story and reading about Maggie and Seth. I can't wait to read Booker's story, which I'm sure it's next in series. I love Unbelievable as much as I loved Unlovable. I give Unbelievable a 4.5 stars and a definite Good Choice for Reading.

Loved this book!
By My Book A Day
Lilah, aka Delilah Lopez Dreser, has come to Port Fare, NY at her father's request. He wants to exact revenge on Booker and Seth, the two MET officers that killed his sons, but knows that if he shows his face he will be shot on sight. So he sends a disguised Lilah in his place. Lilah knows that she needs to get close to Booker and Seth, but she's not quite sure how to do it. She searches for just the right job, only to have it fall into her lap. She's interviewing for a position at an interior design shop in town when Booker himself walks through the door and asks her to decorate Cole's new office at the hospital. Lilah knows that this is the perfect opportunity to get the info that her father needs. But she soon realizes that the picture that he painted of these men is not accurate. She starts really liking the men and Seth's fiance Maggie. She knows that they can not be the hardened killers and thieves that her father makes them out to be, she knows that she must change his mind, she doesn't want her new friends hurt. There's also Cole, the handsome ER doctor that everyone loves. When Lilah starts to fall for him, she knows that she must get out of Port Fare before everyone she cares for is hurt.

I loved this book! There was plenty of romance, action and adventure to keep me interested. The characters are well written, I feel like I "know" Lilah and all the other characters. I really enjoyed the way the ending played out, in general, I knew what would have to happen, but it still kept me guessing right to the last page. I really can't wait to read the next novel in this series!

This book is the second in a series, but there is enough information given that even if you haven't read the first book, you will understand this one.

I clean books!

I was so happy to be included in this blog tour for Sherry Gammon's new book, Unbelievable. This is the second book in the Port Fare series with Unlovable being the first. Although I have had these books on my "to read" list, I hadn't had the chance to read them yet. Gratefully, Sherry sent me both books so I could read them in order. You could read Unbelievable without reading the first book, but I was really glad I did read the first book before this one. I felt like I got to know the characters from square one. Unlovable was a great read and I loved it.

I really believe that if you have great characters that people can connect and relate to you could put them in almost any setting and have a great book. Some books are plot driven and some are character driven. I would definitely put this book into the character driven bag. The characters have real feelings and emotions that I could identify with. Their dialogue was believable and easy flowing. That isn't to say that the plot was lacking, because it totally was not. I loved the continuation of the story line from the first book and the slow building tension because you just know that everything is going to come to a head and blow at any moment.

After reading the first book I had hoped that we would get to know Cole better. Yea for the starring role in this book! He is such a sweet man, gentle and loyal. I just love him. His personality is in stark contrast to Deliah's forward and out loud personality. It was fun watching them come together.

These were some of my favorite reads this month. I'm a fan of Sherry Gammon and I will be watching and waiting for next books.

Good, Basic Annotated Edition Of Poe's Fiction

Poe's brilliant but often arcane writings fairly scream out for an in-depth and lucid annotated text. The huge amount of literary and historical allusions that course through his fiction are of a sort that very few modern readers could possibly fully comprehend. The targets of Poe's frequent satire and parody are pretty much all long forgotten in the great passage of time, rendering some of the tales virtually incomprehensible. One would think that a writer as important and influential as Poe would have numerous annotated editions devoted to his rewarding but difficult fiction. Amazingly, only one such collection is currently in print, this University of Illinois Press volume edited by Stuart and Susan Levine, first published in 1976.
In the preface, the stated task is "to bring together in one convenient edition all of the information one needs to understand Poe's stories." The editors attempt to accomplish this by grouping a series of thematically related tales together in fifteen separate sections (with such titles as SLAPSTICK GOTHIC and SALVATION THROUGH TERROR), each with prefatory information and multiple end notes. The notes do provide much needed explanatory detail to the more obscure references and therefore make the stories easier to understand and appreciate. But the editors go no deeper than that, only offering definitions and never once explaining why Poe may have actually decided it was important to use a particular referential aside or Latin phrase. This is basically just a good, functional introduction to the works of this greatest of all "horror writers." Anyone wanting detailed critical and/or interpretative responses to the stories won't find them here.

Get that practice game sharp and bring it to the course.

Short version : it's a very good book for getting you to focus on your practice routine and stresses the importance of being mindful during practice, and tracking and scoring your progress. This instruction is geared towards trying to get you to apply your practice skills on the course and using measurable ways to improve.

Longer version :

If you're like me, you've spent a lot of time on ranges and practice greens, trying to improve, working with instructors, and just generally spending a lot of time hitting balls. If you're still like me, you probably HAVE improved, but feel like you could have used your time more wisely, or you've circled back too often onto things you should have already "mastered". You're probably even working on some of the same issues you were working on two years ago. This book is for you.

The strength of the book is that his main ideas of what makes a good golf shot are simple and he never loses sight of them as he moves through the book. What are the main ideas. . .
1) Hit the ball in the center of the face, not too near the toe or heel.
2) Strike the ground in the right place, not too fat nor thin.
3) Make sure the clubface and path are correct (he demands that you understand the ball flight laws. If you're not willing to do that, don't read this golf book)
4) Faster club head makes the ball go further. Duh.
5) Finally, angle of attack and dynamic loft.

He spends less time on those final two ideas.

The key point he stresses is this (I quote verbatim), "'What' we achieve at impact is far more important than 'how' we achieve it. Ultimately, form should be changed only if it produces better function. Form changes should not be made to simply look more like a model, or to achieve some kind of pretty symmetrical look."

I don't want to misrepresent him. He believes that swing flaws need to be addressed through instruction. He's an instructor himself, so he's not poo-poo'ing instruction; he's just giving the reader a lot of things to focus on to help the reader improve.

Basically, after outlining WHAT the reader should be trying to achieve, he spends the rest of the book explaining the means to go about getting it. And, believe me, this book is not for someone looking for a shortcut.

This is about going out and making sure you're hitting the center of the face to a certain degree of precision (based on handicap level)

You got that?

Good. Now, start working on hitting the ground in the right place a significant amount of the time.

Got that?

Start working on getting your club path and face right.

You got all that? Move on to the next level and tighten the parameters on every one of those things.

At no point does he talk about what to do with ball position, grip, posture, etc. He seems to be of the opinion that you'll figure a lot of those things out on your own in your process of practicing impact.

In addition to drills and techniques to measure these things (he also gives parameters for improvement based on handicap level), he presents a very interesting look at the mental game of golf. He breaks "swing thoughts" down into 5 categories. . .

-Internal (an idea like "keep your left arm straight" or "head still" or "shift weight")
-External process. I'd say, "what you do with the club." (an idea like "hit the ground in the right place")
-External result. I'd say, "what you do with the ball." (an idea like "draw the ball" or "flight the ball low")
-Neutral. (an idea like "1 2 3 go" or a breathing exercise while you're hitting)
-Transcendental. (essentially no thoughts at all).

He offers the strengths and weaknesses of each, but more importantly, and this is a key idea concerning everything in the book: EXPERIMENT WITH THEM AND SEE WHICH WORKS BEST FOR YOU, on the range and the course.

So, I think that's enough to give you an idea of what the book is about and the author's focus. I'm not going to explain in a page what he uses 400 pages to do. He has a lot of other fun/interesting/useful ideas in the book that I've already implemented in my practice. E.g. as he mentions, you don't play golf from perfect lines off flat surfaces, so get good at adapting and being athletic. . .do a Happy Gilmore swing. Do a swing where you start by hovering the club a foot above the ball. Try a claw grip for full swing. Try a cross-handed grip. Etc etc.

Cons: he's somewhat wordy and repetitive about his ideas. I kept wanting to get to sections on practice and it felt like, "you're harping on this again?" He has a section on the process of change where he comes up with an acronym (SIPFATS) to help you remember the process. It almost seemed unnecessary in light of the other yardsticks and techniques he offers.

In summary, I don't know if the book is going to drop my handicap or if it will be THE LAST GOLF BOOK I'LL EVER NEED!!! but for a guy who feels like he's put in a lot of work, and could use a jolt to get off the current plateau, I feel like I'm all of a sudden armed with a whole new box of tools to do that.

For now, 8/10. Get back to me in a year. I could find it utterly useless, but if I had to guess, I think it's more likely I'd move the book into the 9+ range. I think it's going to prove to be quite useful.

One final thought if anyone has made it this far: I think this would be an excellent book for instructors to read. I've liked the instructors best in my life who have talked about contact, and ball direction more prominently than swing positions (I had a guy once who, when I asked him about my foot alignment, said, "you don't hit the ball with your feet". Sure, he talked about footwork a little, but something like lining your feet up right. . .wasn't meaningful to him).

Adam Young’s The Practice Manual is a MUST HAVE if you want to learn how to practice to become a better golfer. I have traveled the world seeking great golf instruction. I have been taught by some of the best instructors out there. I have sought out some of the most-respected “mental” coaches in the game. I’m a good player, but can’t seem to get over the hump. Young, an instructor at Leadbetter La Manga Academy in Spain, provided exactly what I needed! Young's book does a nice job of describing the basics of how we learn fine motor control and how we can apply what the academicians know about acquiring motor skill to learning the crazy game of golf. The Practice Manual covers the following:

How we learn
How to practice for technical adjustments
How to practice for skill development
How to practice for performance
How to transfer your game to the course
Goal setting and quantifiable practice
How to use statistics during practice to knock shots off your game
How attention (where you place your focus) affects both learning and retention (as well as performance under pressure).
How to schedule your practice effectively over the course of a day, week, month or even year (important for tournament players)

If you can’t get a ball airborne with a driver, of if you can’t break 120, this book is probably not for you. But if you spend time practicing and hit the ball effortlessly on the driving range but not the golf course, I strong encourage you to buy this book and devour it. I must warn you, however, that the methodologies described in are different than you will hear from nearly all "swing instructors." Many people think that to develop the proper “muscle memory” to hit a high fade with a five iron, the same distance every time, you must hit thousands upon thousands of five irons with a high fade attempting to hit that same distance every time. Young’s book logically shows you why that notion is incorrect.

Apparently we learn to repeat a fine motor action by practicing variations of that motor action, not by repeating the same motor action over and over. If you hit 50 drivers in a row, one after another, by simply scraping balls over to the practice from the range bucket, by the second or third one, your brain shuts down and stops learning. At that point you are simply exercising, not practicing the golf swing. That type of practice, is known as “blocking” or “chunking.” We don’t learn to catch a ball, drive a car or shoot basketballs (repeatable, automatic motor actions) with chunked practice, why would we try to learn the complex motor movements of the golf swing by repeating the same action over and over? I know it is counter-intuitive, but if we want to hit the ball consistently with a chosen trajectory, Young shows us that academic research concludes that we best learn to do that by practicing different (yes, varied but different) trajectories (i.e., practice by trying to hit one low, next one high, next one medium, next one low right to left, and so on). Apparently, it is the process of attempting to create variation that causes the brain to rapidly learn the fine adjustments in motor movements necessary to learn and be able to retrieve those learning when needed!

If you want to get the most out of your practice, you need this book!

MIGHT BE THE MOST IMPORTANT GOLF BOOK YOU'LL EVER READ

If you are a golfer that wants to improve, this book is a game changer! It might very well be the most important golf book you'll ever read. Here's why: for every 1,000 golf instruction books, articles, and videos, 999 involve the technical aspects of the swing (e.g. swing on plane, grip, hip turn) and 1 involves something else--course management, how to think about golf (think Bob Rotella), but statistically ZERO involve the most important topic-- HOW TO LEARN AND PRACTICE GOLF. If you've been in the golf world, you know that most player's handicaps go up not down, and most players don't make positive changes to their golf game, even after spending a lot of money on lessons.

FINALLY, an instructor is addressing the HOW to learn and practice and not the WHAT to learn and practice. Even if all this book does for you is introduce you to the concept of thinking about HOW to learn and practice, it'll be worth a hundred times what you paid for it. We serious golfers have seen it over and over: The instructor tells a student something she or he already knows (start the downswing with your hips, don't come over the top, post up on your front leg, shift your weight forward on the downswing ...) and then the instructor gives the student, that just ponied up $150 for an hour, a few drills to work on ... and then the student tries to implement the change ... but then a while later, the student reverts right back to their old habits and the only thing that changes is that the student wasted a lot of time and money. It is really sad. I know, I've been there; and I think it drives a lot of people out the game.

SO... BUY THIS BOOK! And do what Adam Young says! Stop wasting your time! Make those changes! I tell you: if you are, let's say, a 15 handicapper, and trying to get down to single digits, this book could save you years and thousands of dollars.

I COULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK MORE FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO IMPROVE THEIR GOLF GAME AND DO SO AS EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE.

The obvious response to my review is, if it's so great, why did you give it 4 stars and not 5? Here's why: I have never seen a book in more desperate need of a heavy handed story editor, copy editor and proofreader than this book. This book is cumbersome, unorganized, full of syntax errors, typographical errors, run-ons, and any other type of editing issue you can imagine. It's 400 pages and it should be 250, tops. I don't blame Adam Young for this, necessarily. He's obviously a smart guy and a dedicated golf instructor who is trying to do more than the usual regurgitation of swing fundamentals. My sincere hope is that Mr. Young will take the proceeds of the sale of this first edition (which I hope are high) and hire a story and copy editor and have this book properly edited and published. It's a gem, and needs to be polished.

The good news regarding the unfortunate lack of editing is that it will have little effect on you golfers that need this book (other than a few eye rolls and sighs). This book could be written in crayon, and it will still change your life as a golfer dramatically.

So, bravo Adam Young. Your students and the readers of this book are in your debt as they watch their handicaps drop.

This book offers a clear and concise analysis of America's use of private military contractors in combat. The author supports his thesis using a mixed methods approach, and presents his findings in a way that makes the book both useful to scholars and accessible to readers from a wide range of academic backgrounds. This book would be particularly useful in an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course on US Army operations, offering insight into topics ranging from funding and sustaining the war to the impact of contractors on national strategy and public opinion.

This study demonstrates that America's use of private military contractors to augment combat forces has both a long history and a significant effect on the character of America's wars. Further, it reveals that America's use of private military contractors is likely to continue into the future. Debates regarding the use of such contractors in recent wars makes this book as relevant and timely as it is clear and convincing. Highly recommended.

Highly Recommend for Scholars and Practitioners- well researched and written with policy relevance

I recently purchased and read this book as I am interested in assigning it to a future graduate-level course. I’ve taught courses on International Defense Strategies, American Foreign Policy, and Global Security Threats and this book would be a great fit in these courses and many more related to Military Science, Political Science, and Security Studies. The case studies on former operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are relevant to contemporary political and security issues. Perhaps the greatest strength of this book for a graduate-level course is that it offers a great example of mixed methods and shows students how to use the complementary quantitative and qualitative methods in an easily accessible format. Thus, I also recommend this book for introductory courses in applied methodology. Even if the reader isn’t well-versed in these methods, the chapter summaries provide a coherent analyses of the research findings.

I highly recommend this book for scholars or practitioners interested in learning more about the use of private security contractors or instructors looking for an example of social science research with policy-relevant content.

Horace: One of the Greats of Roman Literature

Making Horace available in superb English translation as most of us can no longer read him in Latin as our forbears did is always a welcome invitation to become conversant with his greatness as we should with Horace as well as with Cicero and Lucretius among the other great Roman writers.

A nicely constructed anthology

As a former English major, I still like to attend a Shakespeare play when a talented troupe visits my town so, I try to occasionally dip my big toe in the waters of classic literature. As Roman poets go, I was more familiar with the works of Virgil than that of Horace, so I decided to give this a look.

It would be a bit presumptuous of me to impose a scholastic review of Horace, the poet, since many scholars of superior qualification have already written exhaustively on that topic. Instead, I offer a review of the construction of this anthology, which I find to be neatly presented in precise thematic categories to make the navigation of ancient literature more accessible and manageable for an enthusiast, like myself.

As for the poetry of Horace itself, I personally find it best taken in small doses, but I also find it intriguing since the work of this poet is claimed to have influenced both Shakespeare and his chief rival, Ben Jonson. But as for the construction of this anthology, I give it a thumbs up. For the e book price of this anthology, you really can’t beat it.
